Every year there's a series of award shows for video games. Reading the list of winners in blog posts is fun enough but actually watching the shows is boring and repetitive. Every category has a nearly identical list of nominees except for the specific categories. Given how varied and unique each video game experience is I'd like to present my sample list of 'Best of' categories. Also, I just thought it'd be fun to pick out my favorite all time games to demonstrate how difficult it really is to narrow down THE best game. Without further adieu:
Best 3D Platformer: Super Mario 64 (Runner Up: Ratchet & Clank Future Trilogy)
Best 2D Platformer: New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Runner Up: Kirby Super Star Ultra)
Best Shooter: Half-Life 2 (Runner Up: Bioshock)
Best Adventure: Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask (Runner Up: God of War Trilogy)
Best Open World Action: Grand Theft Auto 4 (Runner Up: Assassin's Creed 2)
Best RPG: Final Fantasy 6 (Runner Up: Final Fantasy 12)
Best Action/RPG: Fallout 3 (Runner Up: Diablo 2)
Best Competitive Shooter: Team Fortress 2 (Runner Up: MAG)
Best Co-operative: Rock Band 3 (Runner Up: Left 4 Dead 2)
Best Racing: Burnout Paradise (Runner Up: Mario Kart Wii)
Best Action/Puzzle: Portal (Runner Up: Braid)
Best Unorthodox: Twisted Metal (Runner Up: Katamari Damacy)
It's not a perfect list but it's about as solid as I can make it while giving each category two proper winners.
